The Orange County Sheriff’s Office faced a significant challenge—private conversations in interrogation and soft rooms were audible from adjacent spaces and corridors. This compromised investigative integrity and discouraged victims from speaking freely in rooms designed for safety and comfort.

Commercial Acoustics was contracted to diagnose sound transfer paths, seal structural gaps, and design a sound masking system tailored to the needs of a high-security legal environment.

• Flanking Paths: Shared airspace over ACT ceilings increased audibility

Pre-installation assessments showed doors and seals functioning as intended. Above the ACT ceiling, however, walls extended to the deck but included unsealed penetrations for utilities. These openings created direct flanking paths for speech. Our team sealed these penetrations with acoustic caulk to reduce transmission and prepare the space for a properly tuned acoustic masking system.

A customized layout ensured uniform coverage: each interrogation room, soft room, and corridor received a sound masking emitter mounted on J-hooks fastened to the deck above, with power and data cabling routed to a centralized controller. Our team used the Sound Masking Calculator during design to verify emitter counts and placement, ensuring consistent coverage across every space.

Because ACT tiles were due for replacement, our schedule removed the old tile, installed equipment, and replaced tile in one streamlined process to minimize disruption and avoid coordinating multiple contractors. This method simplified logistics while improving installation efficiency and maintaining precision in the sound masking system.
