Olivia Italian, a modern American-Italian restaurant in South Tampa, quickly became a local favorite after its 2019 opening. While the food and design drew praise, the acoustics did not. Reflective surfaces and open ceilings created excessive echo, making conversations difficult for diners. Commercial Acoustics was brought in to design and install acoustic ceiling clouds to control reverberation and deliver a comfortable dining environment without compromising aesthetics.

Olivia Italian’s dining room features elegant finishes such as floor-to-ceiling glass, wood paneling, and decorative slats—materials that reflect rather than absorb sound. While visually striking, this design created an unintended issue: high levels of reverberation. Guests noted difficulty holding conversations, particularly in the lively bar area. The restaurant’s open ceiling included spray insulation, a white metal deck, and sprinkler lines spaced closely at eight-foot intervals. These constraints required careful measurement and planning to ensure ceiling clouds would be positioned correctly without interfering with fire protection systems. With limited placement options, the design needed to maximize absorption coverage while maintaining compliance with safety standards.

The Commercial Acoustics team fabricated and wrapped ceiling clouds in Tampa before transporting them to the restaurant for installation. Working with 16-foot ceiling heights, technicians used a scissor lift to install the panels above the sprinkler lines. By mounting additional panels above the central wood-slat feature, the absorption was evenly distributed throughout the dining room. The off-white fabric was carefully selected to complement the existing ceiling color, preserving the restaurant’s refined design while solving the acoustic issue.
