Tampa Theatre – Acoustic Stretched Fabric Wall & Fiberglass

Commercial Acoustics was lucky to be apart of the renovation process for the historic Tampa Theatre, a beloved location that has been open for 98 years! With their one century anniversary coming up, Tampa Theatre felt it was best to expand by adding an intimate screening room to provide guests with a unique experience. We were contracted by Creative Contractors to add acoustic treatment to the room, which included installing stretched fabric wall, embossed felt wall panels and black theater board fiberglass.

Stretched fabric wall is suitable for theaters as it absorbs sound rather than reflecting it, furthermore creating an advanced listening environment.

Stretched Fabric Wall for Sound Absorption in Theaters

Building and renovating the new screening room required installing an absorptive product like our acoustic stretched fabric wall to create the perfect soundscape. This floor-to-ceiling product is made of an acoustic fabric that helps achieve the high NRC rating needed in a space like this one. Fabric wall ranges in thickness which further impacts the NRC level, ranging from 0.8 to 1.15. Tampa Theatre chose our 1″ thick fabric system as it was suitable for the small screening room with only 42 seats. Sound will be effectively absorbed rather than reflected, allowing guests to fully immerse in the theater experience.

We installed 2,550 sq ft of our stretched fabric wall on the ceiling and walls of the screening room. While the ceiling fabric remained one color, Tampa Theatre decided that the felt wall panels would look great with a design in place. They selected the embossed damask pattern from MDC Zintra to match the elegant aesthetic of the other vicinities in Tampa Theatre. That’s one of the greatest things about our products; you can customize it to be an invisible form of acoustical treatment or make it a decorative touch!

Fiberglass Panels for Durable Noise Insulation

Pictured is the damask design that was selected for the fabric wall, with the fiberglass panels hidden underneath.

Fiberglass is typically used as an internal, hidden noise reduction method since it’s an underlayment to whatever material is added on top of it. For additional noise reduction in the screening room, we installed 2″ thick black fiberglass on the screen wall and floor of the room. Putting these panels in the central point of the room (in this case, the screen wall) tackles any reverberation issues that may occur when a film is playing. Additionally, fiberglass is extremely durable which provides Tampa Theatre with a long-lasting product.

Tampa Theatre – Acoustic Stretched Fabric Wall & Fiberglass

To conclude, our team installed 3 types of acoustic products in Tampa Theatre’s screening room:

  1. Stretched Fabric Wall
  2. Embossed Felt Wall Panels
  3. Black Theater Board Fiberglass

The installation of these products will ensure that guests can be fully immersed into Tampa Theatre’s new screening room experience, without worrying about disruptions or increased reverberation. As the theatre is already one of Tampa’s most historical and beloved buildings, installing long-lasting products like the ones listed above will guarantee entertainment for years to come. This project was a huge accomplishment for our team and we are blessed to showcase our hard work!
