Tampa Airport – Acoustic Ceiling Tile and Wall Panels

Commercial Acoustics was contracted to update the acoustics in the Tampa International Airport. This was specifically the TRACON, or traffic control room, which is used by air traffic controllers to guide aircraft in and out of the airport. The room is extremely noise sensitive, as clear communication between air traffic controllers and pilots helped to prevent any miscommunication or issues. Our team was given the opportunity to mitigate this problem and find a solution.

Acoustic Ceiling Tile and Wall Panels for Airports

The work had to be completed between midnight and 4:00 a.m. to minimize disruption to the airport operations. New impact resistant acoustical treatments were installed along the walls to reduce reverb in the space. Black ceiling tiles were used to further reduce echo, but also allow the controllers to focus on their stations. For ideal acoustics within the space, a target reverb time of 0.5 seconds was used, similar to a control room for audio mixing.

The renovation was carried out by the Tampa airport authority, and included a dozen mobilizations over 6 months, with a total of 7,000 square feet of ceilings, and several hundred square feet of custom acoustical fabric wall treatment. The acoustic ceiling tile covered up to 5,322 square feet of the space. We also installed fabric wrapped wall panels which covered up to 1,570 square feet. These panels were selected to be a medium grey fabric option with square and hardened edges. Acoustic panels absorb sound in a space and provides a barrier.

Tampa Airport: Acoustic Ceiling Tile and Wall Panels – Conclusion

To review, our team installed acoustic ceiling tile and wall panels within the space. This will allow Tampa Airport employees to effectively and efficiently carry out their duties. Thanks to our team for their hard work and enthusiasm throughout the entirety of this project. Please feel free to contact our team if your space is in need of acoustical treatment!
