Greenville Courthouse – Wall Panels

Commercial Acoustics was contracted by Robins & Morton to install acoustic treatment at Greenville Courthouse located in Mississippi. Acoustic treatment is necessary in spaces like a courthouse since speech intelligibility is highly valued; an essential for a courtroom. The new courthouse was filled with echo and outside voices could easily be heard, so we had to come up with a solution. To tackle this, our team installed our own wall panels as well as Topakustik perforated wood panels.

The acoustic wall panels appear to be a discreet form of acoustic treatment, as it looks like any other wall.

Acoustic Panels for Absorption in Courtrooms

To begin this project, our team made the acoustic wall panels in field. These were to be installed in the magistrate and district courtrooms. The panels consist of a black fiberglass which becomes fabric-wrapped before installation. By installing this product on the walls, it decreases the amount of echo that comes through, allowing for better speech clarity. In addition to the panels, another subcontractor decided to put wooden slats over them. This adds an aesthetic touch to the space and masks the acoustical treatment, making it look like an ordinary wall.

Our team also installed Topakustik perforated wooden panels. The standard installation method has the panels stood off from the wall with enough space to place fiberglass insulation behind the wood panels, keeping the bright yellow material hidden yet functional. The absorptive material has an impressive NRC of 0.9, which will greatly reduce the amount of noise that gathers in a space, allowing courtroom members to effectively carry out their duties. The aesthetic appeal of these panels make them a highly sought out product and provided Greenville Courthouse with exactly what they envisioned.
