Sound Masking in Your Business Office
One of the most cost-effective ways to improve the acoustics in your office is to actually add sound – a process we know as sound masking. This sound masking option essentially adds a bit of “background” noise in your space. This option is extremely effective in open office concepts, such as those with cubicles in a bullpen, as well as libraries, hospitals, and offices with sensitive information, such as those in the financial industry or legal practices.
A commercial sound masking system is installed above the ceiling tile in your office space. The sound masking speakers are spaced at approximately 15 feet, so that there are no “hot spots” in the office. By providing a background noise, conversations that you are not directly involved in become drowned out. We call the distracting increase or decrease in sound “dynamic range”, or the difference between loud and quiet sounds in a space over a short period of time. Dynamic ranges over 10 dB are extremely distracting, especially in the office. By raising the background noise in a space, loud noises do not sound as loud, lowering the overall dynamic range in a space.
