The shop drawing and submittal phase on the project were highly accelerated to meet the quick turnaround required by the theater client.

Commercial Acoustics installed 10,000 SF of acoustical paneling in the Chapin Theater location within the Orange County Convention Center. The project was contracted under Whiting Turner construction, and was completed under an extremely tight timeframe of 45 days. The work was specified by KMF Architects and included 6 different types of fabric, 4 types of fiberglass, and numerous other components sourced from vendors all over the country.

The Ekko Eraser Acoustical Panels, ranging from 1” to 2-1/8” provided NRC values between 0.8 and 1.1 to achieve the acoustical environment required by the acoustic consultant.

Prior paneling was taken down prior to replacement, and the 54”x54” panels required custom splicing to meet the non-standard sizes. Tolerances along each row were less than 1/16” per panel, to allow for a seamless view.

Over 5,000 Impaling Clips were used to successfully mount the panels. Muslin underlay was used to prevent telegraphing of the fiberglass through the sheer FR701 acoustical fabric.

Impact resistant panels were required in all locations below 10’ AFF (above finished floor). Panels were installed up to 70’ high using a boom lift, requiring an OSHA 30 certified crew chief on Commercial Acoustics’ team at all times.

During install, panels were fastened as high as 70’ above ground, covering floor to ceiling. The end effect was a acoustically-enhanced theater space, which hosts some of the world’s most prestigious acts and entertainers, including international ballet and opera groups

The Orange County Convention Center is a massive facility located in Orlando, Florida. It offers a total of 7 million square feet of space, with 2.1 million square feet dedicated to exhibit space1. The center is divided into two main buildings: the West Building, which has 4 million square feet, and the North/South Building, which has 3 million square feet.
