Tropical Smoothie Acoustic Art Panel

sound treatment acoustical artwork

As with many restaurants, Tropical Smoothie was suffering unwanted reverberation due to hard surfaces in their kitchen and dining area. Commercial Acoustics came on site and performed a reverberation test, then implemented a unique solution that improved their acoustics and aesthetics; a custom-printed absorption panel. The printing is done on acoustically-transparent fabric that allows the sound to transition into the absorbing core, made of mineral fiber.

Using Acoustic Panel Art to Absorb Echo while Decorating

The art panel was custom-made over a 2-week timeframe, and installed on site after-hours. While the Acoustic Art Panel did provide a considerable increase in Sabins in the reflective environment, there were a number of other baffles and standard acoustic panels also installed to ensure the reverberation time met our Acoustic Best Practices standard.

To meet our strict product quality standards, all acoustic art panels are fabricated with wood borders and Guilford of Maine sound absorbing fabrics to ensure ideal performance. The NRC of the panels matches the 1.05 absorption coefficient of our standard 2″ thick acoustic panels. All custom art panels are manufactured with a dye sublimation process to ensure that the fabric pores are not clogged, thus maintaining their acoustic performance.

For many large acoustic panels, an art proof is created prior to printing and submitted to the client to ensure the design and artwork meet the client’s intent. Wrapping must be done so that the sides of the panel allow adequate run-off of the artwork, or the edges will not look natural. As a best practice, wood frames are generally required for Art Panels to ensure firm corners and edges.
